00:29:08 CTW: https://transformationofwork.org/blog/ctw-community-meeting-august-4-2022-indias-booming-gig-economy
00:29:49 Jeffrey Moss: Great article in HBR last week. Key line: “Better yet, why not turn the “gig economy” into a permanent pipeline: Gig a job out and invite the best performers in for full-time roles at premium rewards?” https://hbr.org/2022/09/when-hiring-prioritize-assignments-over-interviews
00:30:06 Chris “Link” Duarte: https://www.pickmybrain.world/
00:30:33 Ana Kramarenko: Let’s connect https://www.linkedin.com/in/ana-elena-kramarenko/ You can check out our freelance marketplace here 😉 https://www.linkedin.com/in/ana-elena-kramarenko/
00:30:34 Maxine Cunningham – Pick My Brain: Thank you Chris!
00:31:04 Ana Kramarenko: https://www.linkedin.com/company/9301777 I mean here 🙂
00:33:04 Jeffrey Moss: Jon is the man!!
00:33:04 Maxine Cunningham – Pick My Brain: Pretty sure I want to pick every brain in this room. Does Centre of Transformation of Work have it’s own knowledge marketplace? If not… I know someone who could build one for you! Haha
00:36:16 Maxine Cunningham – Pick My Brain: Interesting problem to solve. How do we make open talent / freelancing more consistent and sustainable so that we aren’t always in drive or die zone! Fascinating. Can’t wait to read the research piece Jon!
00:38:29 Ruben Vereecken: Late to the party – I’m Ruben, CTO of Open Assembly, fresh off the boat. We’re working on some really exciting stuff – I’ll be looking closely at talent platforms in particular. Happy to connect: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rubenvereecken
00:40:08 Bondili, Balaji: No use of the term “Open Talent”
00:40:27 Arthur Ransier: A lot of the same topics I’ve seen since getting into this industry 9 years ago
00:40:51 Janice Stevenor Dale: Change/Evolution many topics…
00:40:52 Chris “Link” Duarte: DEI is at the front….but not throughout
00:41:04 Gavin McClafferty: no real mention of the future.
00:41:21 Rich Wilson: This looks like the same agenda from 2010 🙂
00:41:32 Jeffrey Moss: Looks like procurement (and other administrative aspects) is more the focus than where gigs fit strategically
00:41:36 Bondili, Balaji: We need more users on these events
00:42:26 Chris “Link” Duarte: DEI also does not translate to “enhancing culture”- Diversity is more than just conversations about race
00:43:08 Jeffrey Moss: This is key @bryan – thinking about gigs = staffing. Zero focus on anything tied to strategic rationale.
00:43:20 Steve Rader: more focus on innovation
00:43:22 Janice Stevenor Dale: more open-minded agenda
00:43:29 Steve Rader: Gig work mentioned
00:43:32 Gavin McClafferty: Nice to see an agenda that reflects an emergence from the pandemic!
00:43:46 Bondili, Balaji: Very little focus on the value to the economic buyer
00:43:56 Bondili, Balaji: mostly process shite.
00:44:15 Doug Atkin: FYI, as you can see I am irreverent – my comments about consulting are in jest. Balaji, your thoughts AND slides proved invaluable to the OA off-site. For those on the call, Balaji is one of the foremost experts in the future of work space
00:44:49 Bondili, Balaji: Doug, I can take a joke! All consultants are not dry!
00:45:24 Doug Atkin: BUT my son worked for Deloitte and billed me $300/hour for visiting his parents
00:45:37 Jeffrey Moss: @Jon is always a step (or 10) ahead – https://www.forbes.com/sites/jonyounger/2018/07/30/do-student-freelancers-make-better-employees-microsoft-thinks-so/
00:46:51 Ruben Vereecken: Balaji a consultant with a sense of humor – you’re obviously in the wrong industry
00:46:57 Chris “Link” Duarte: Everything on the list is focused on the enterprise and not implementing help and resources for the talent
00:47:56 Maxine Cunningham – Pick My Brain: So true Chris.
00:49:25 Chris “Link” Duarte: Was there any talk or session that focused on rural segments?
00:52:49 Liliana Pop: HBR has published recently about how the HR function is changing and also about platforms…
00:53:37 Arthur Ransier: The proposed joint-employment rule by NLRB, rescinding and placing the 2020 rule, is cause for concern as well
00:53:42 Arthur Ransier: replacing*
00:55:14 Arthur Ransier: “extended assignment limit” is so funny to me…
00:55:43 Arthur Ransier: Mainsail gray
00:55:48 James Wright: I’d suggest ‘isolation’ as another potentially negative consequence to remote working that we need to be cognisant of and have a plan to mitigate for
00:55:49 Bondili, Balaji: again, procurement facing solutions. The fact the SIA doesn’t interact with economic buyers or day to day users/ managers makes them ask the wrong questions
00:55:50 Arthur Ransier: 😂
00:56:22 Arthur Ransier: Great point @James Wright
00:56:54 Liliana Pop: HBR article on platforms – https://hbr.org/2020/11/rethinking-the-on-demand-workforce
00:58:54 Jon Younger: I’ve written some stuff about the forward necessary role of HR in open talent. If you put “jon younger forbes HR” in your browser, you’ll see some recent articles. Hope you find them useful. 😀
00:59:12 Bondili, Balaji: @Doug – too many vendors. I am waiting for some one to do a PE style roll up, build some scale and infrastructure
00:59:56 Chris “Link” Duarte: If you have enjoyed today’s CTW conversation, and you are passionate about talent advocacy, please join our monthly CTW Advocacy Community Call. We meet every third Tuesday at 12pm EST. Here is the link to register: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUscuusqj4jH922h0Ad_-BA0aoOcqIQ5X2R
01:00:05 Doug Atkin: @balaji Agree- I think first step is the “trivago” for the gig economy?
01:01:46 Chris “Link” Duarte: Jon +1
01:01:47 Bondili, Balaji: Yes, but a horizontal (combine sources of talent pools) and vertical (talent pools, MSP, EoR, VMS). Takes a lot of capital to do, but it significantly reduces complexity and aligns incentives.
01:02:00 Steve Rader: +1 Jon
01:02:14 Doug Atkin: agreed
01:02:41 Chris “Link” Duarte: HR are the types that want to put things easily in boxes….Open talent is a moving target and HR doesn’t like all the red tape
01:03:19 Steve King: Stone Point, a very large PE firm with a history of doing roll ups, acquired Beeline. It will be interesting to see what they do.
01:03:42 James Wright: Isn’t the MSP space a prime candidate to be largely digitised and subsequently commoditised? As the on demand talent model is increasingly adopted and matures the line between business and talent will likely shorten. This in turn could be a very disruptive movement for MSP intermediaries. Effectively adding a new channel to the established B2B / B2C…..Namely B2T.
01:04:13 Chris “Link” Duarte: Helpful HR Talent platform: https://elastajobs.com/ Anne is a regular here at CTW
01:05:10 CTW: Any comments or questions – feel free to raise your hand!

01:06:10 Jon Younger: And, of course, Brandon.
01:07:04 Bondili, Balaji: Someone needs to come in a boatload of cash and reimagine this value chain.
